Our Residences

James Lenox House Association provides housing to older adults in two residences on Manhattan’s Upper East Side: James Lenox House and Carnegie East House.

Founded at the end of the Civil War by NYC’s prominent Lenox family to provide safe housing for war widows, James Lenox House Association continues as a donor-supported not-for-profit organization focused on offering older adults exceptional housing that is affordable, safe, secure, diverse, and health-centric.  James Lenox House is part of the Mitchell-Lama Housing Program and meets a growing need for affordably priced independent housing with quality supportive services for those age 55 and older.

James Lenox House Association is comprised of James Lenox House on East 73rd Street offering independent housing and Carnegie East House near East 95th Street offering enhanced services to those needing help with daily living.  (To learn more about Carnegie East House, please see their website at http://www.carnegieeast.org.)

Please note that the waiting list for James Lenox House is now closed.

Both the Houses and the leadership of Executive Director Joe Girven have been consistently recognized for their excellence.  In the past few years alone, Joe has been honored by Crain’s New York as a Notable Nonprofits and Philanthropy leader, by NY1 News as New Yorker of the Week, and in 2023 by Strauss Media’s Our Town with its annual OTTY Award saluting 10 exceptional NYC civic leaders.

Importantly, supporting our Houses is a dedicated Board and a superb, caring staff committed to helping protect the resilience and the future of our vulnerable community of older adults.
